School Immunizations: School Entry (4 to 6 years of age), Grade 6, Grade 9
As children get older, the immunity provided by childhood vaccines can wear off. Children are also at risk of new diseases as they enter their pre-teen years. That’s why they need vaccinations too.
Routine school age immunizations are free and easy to get.

When are Immunizations Provided?
Immunizations are provided when children start school (4 to 6 years of age) and in Grade 6 and 9.
How are School Aged Children immunized in Interior Health?
- Children 4 to 6 years of age are immunized by public health nurses at the local Public Health Centre Some areas offer immunizations before children enter kindergarten and some offer them in kindergarten. Information will be sent home regarding dates and times.
- Students in grades 6 and 9 are immunized by public health nurses at school. Consent cards and information will be sent home.
Consent Process for children 4 to 6 years of age
If you accompany your child for the immunization, written consent is not needed.
- If a relative or friend accompanies your child, a handwritten note giving permission for your child to be immunized is recommended.
- If there is no note, the public health nurse may try to reach you by phone.
- If you cannot be reached, the immunization will be deferred.
Consent Process for Students in Grades 6 and 9
For students in Grade 6 and 9, immunizations are given at the school to those students who have returned a completed and signed consent card.
- It is recommended that parents or guardians and their children discuss consent for immunization.
- Efforts are first made to seek parental/guardian or representative consent prior to immunization.
- Children under the age of 19, who are able to understand the benefits and possible reactions for each vaccine and the risk of not getting immunized, can legally consent to or refuse immunizations.
Where to get a Consent Card (Grades 6 and 9)
You will receive an envelope home that will include a consent card and vaccine information for all the vaccines that your child will be offered.
