Immunizations Immunizations remain one of the most protective methods for many preventable diseases. Getting your child immunized not only protects them but also helps to protect those individuals that are unable to have the vaccine themselves. Contact your local Health Centre if you think your child is not up to date with their immunizations.
School Children Still Need Immunizing. Continuing to immunize your child is one of the most important ways to promote their health. Diseases can and will reappear if children are not fully protected through immunization. Get your child immunized on time for the best possible protection.
Recommended Immunizations for School Aged Children
*Varicella vaccine is given if: child has not previously been immunized, or has not had the disease, or has had the disease < 12 months of age.
- Kindergarten age (4 -6 years) immunizations are done at your local Health Centre.
- Grade 6 & 9 immunizations are done by public health nurses who set up clinics at your child’s school.
Kindergarten Immunization Program (4-6 years)
Kindergarten age (4 -6 years) immunizations are done at your local Health Centre. Some areas set up clinics for children prior to school entry, and other areas immunize during the school year. In some areas, Kindergarten immunizations are offered as their own program or as part of a kindergarten health fair.
Consent for Kindergarten Immunization:
Parents receive written notice of when the clinics will be held. You can also call your local Health Centre and ask to speak to a public health nurse.
If you accompany your child for the kindergarten immunization, written consent is not needed. However, if a relative or friend accompanies your child, a handwritten note giving permission for your child to be immunized is recommended. If there is no note, the public health nurse may try to reach you by phone. If you cannot be reached, the immunization will be deferred.
