Clearwater is a new and thriving community with an approximate population of 5,000 and has a surrounding catchment population of approximately 6,000.
Recreational opportunities abound in the area with up-to-date facilities and some of the most spectacular scenery and wilderness in the country. Within Wells Gray Park, experience the stunning vistas of high mountains, deep canyons, volcanic cones, brooding old-growth forests and raging white-water rivers.
Clearwater's relaxing lifestyle is well suited for young working families and those looking for a slower pace of life. The community offers a safe and peaceful environment with all the amenities of a sustainable community including education, health care and recreational opportunities. Education is available from kindergarten to Grade 12 with available post-secondary opportunities. The community has its own hospital and medical clinic that provide service to the surrounding area.
Clearwater’s economy is based mainly in forestry and tourism, with tourism experiencing significant growth as travelers from around the world flock to the wilderness that surrounds the community.
Drive times to major centres are approximately two and a half hours to Kamloops (220 km), eight and a half hours to Calgary (805 km), and four hours to Kelowna (380 km).
Clinic Details:
  • Clearwater Medical Clinic

  • Clinic: Clearwater Medical Centre is a collegial single-group clinic located two kilometers from the hospital site. The clinic services a population base of approximately 5,000 people. Clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Physicians also provide on-call services for the hospital. The Medical Centre has an Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and a full physician complement of four or five physicians. Physicians generally work four days a week in the clinic.


    Hospital: Dr. Helmcken Memorial Hospital is a 24-hour Level 1 community hospital newly completed in 2002, with a 24-hour Emergency Room. This facility has six private Acute Care beds, six stretcher beds in the Emergency Room, and an attached twenty-one bed Residential Care Unit. The hospital also provides inpatient and outpatient services for Laboratory, Electrocardiogram (ECG) Service, Radiology, Physiotherapy, and Spirometry. Additional services include Home Care, Home Support, Public Health, Environmental Health & Protection Services, Diabetes and Dietitian Teaching, as well as Mental Health services through Yellowhead Community Services.


    Kamloops is the nearest tertiary referral site. Hospital transportation is supported by an Ambulance Station that is located on same property as the hospital. In emergency situations, a helicopter and the High Acuity Response Team (HART) are dispatched from Kamloops to transport the patient from the site to an advanced centre for additional acute care. ​
Practice Details:
  • The Clearwater Medical Centre is looking for additional physicians to join their group medical team. Practice offers a relaxed pace of work with good remuneration and congenial colleagues. Physicians provide on-call services for the hospital.
Qualifications:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS)
    • Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification (ATLS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification (PALS)
    • Emergency experience
    • Licensed in BC, appropriate CMPA coverage
Call Schedule:
  • On call requirements: ​ 1:3 to 1:4 (one in three, or one in four) depending on locum availability. Medical On Call Availability Program, Level One (MOCAP, Level 1). Strive for an on-call rotation of one in four, and are currently working with locum physicians to assist on-call

    • Fee for Service
  • Estimated Gross Income:
    • $250,000 - $350,000 before overhead and multiple stipends
  • RSA Incentives:
    • The Rural Physicians for British Columbia provide a one-time incentive payment of $100,000 for a three-year return of service (if eligible).
    • Recruitment incentive: $20,000
    • Retention fee premium: 14%
    • Retention flat fee: $12,240
    • Retention Fee Premium of 14% is on top of all fee for service billings.
  • Additional Incentives:
    • Relocation Reimbursement of up to $10,000 (up to $15,000 if greater than 3000km). With receipts.
    • Rural Emergency Enhancement Fund (REEF): Shift incentives and other incentives.
    • Recruitment Incentive: May be available based on length of commitment.
    • Rural Continuing Medical Education
    • Vacation or Continuing Medical Education (CME) Leave: 43 days per year with Rural Locum Program.
    • Medical On-Call Availability Program, Level One (MOCAP, Level 1) payment of $616 per 24-hour on-call availability.
