Phase 2: Interior Heart and Surgical Centre

The second phase of the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre Project is the construction of a new 13,935.46 square-metre (152,000 square-foot) building to house the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre. Construction began in the summer of 2012 with the start of demolition of the existing Pandosy Building. The IHSC opened for patient care on September 28, 2015. The 4th floor where a new perinatal (maternity) unit will be housed opens in early March 2016.

One of the most important aspects of the new project is that it is an integrated critical care surgical facility. The permanent Interior Heart and Surgical Centre will include a brand new, state of the art surgical unit with capacity for 15 operating rooms (plus one dedicated OR for scheduled Caesarean section deliveries and multiple births in the new perinatal unit). The surgical suite will be fully integrated with a complete cardiac revascularization program, including open heart surgery with specialty care beds and percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs).
