Phase 3: Other Changes

Summary of Other Construction Activities at KGH

The final phase of the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre Project is renovations to the existing hospital and additions to the new Centennial Building. These renovations and additions will be ongoing, and will be complete in 2017.

With the completion of the Centennial and Dr. Walter Anderson buildings, and the relocation of several departments, a number of areas of the existing buildings are being renovated to accommodate or expand other departments.

Royal Building Level 1

  • The main floor of the Royal Building, including the main lobby, the old Emergency Department, the old Ambulatory Care Centre, and the Patient Registration area, will be converted into a new Cardiac Cath Lab.
  • The new lab will include two Cardiac Cath Procedure Rooms, plus one future room and the required prep and recovery areas.
  • This space will also house the Express Testing component, the Pacer Clinic and other support areas.
  • Construction of the new Cath Lab space began in July 2012. It will be complete and the Cath Lab will open in November 2013.
  • The KGH Pharmacy Department will also be expanding.
  • It will expand into the 119 square meters of the old Respiratory Department, primarily to create a new Hood Room and support space that meets current codes and standards.

Strathcona Changes

  • With the opening of the Centennial Building, a number of services moved over from the Strathcona Building, and renovations began in Strathcona to prepare it to support surgical services that will be moving to the IHSC building.
  • Renovations to the nursing unit on 4 East were completed in December, 2012.
  • 4 East is now a Medical ALC Unit, and reopened in September, 2012.
  • 4A is a Surgical Unit and opened in September, 2012.
  • 2 West is now the Cardiac Surgical Unit.
  • Three RFPs were released in Summer 2013 to begin preparations for the reconfiguration of Levels 1 and 2 in the Strathcona building. The renovations to Level 1 will expand the kitchen (completed), laundry, housekeeping and logistics/loading facilities, as well as the pharmacy.
  • Level 2 reconfiguration will make way for six Coronary Care Unit beds, 20 Cardiology Telemetry Inpatient Beds and 14 Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Beds.
  • External links from Strathcona to the IHSC building will also be built at Levels 2 and 3 (completed).
