Nelson is a vibrant community with an approximate population of 12,000 people serving an area of 25,000. For specialty services, Nelson  helps support a surrounding catchment population of approximately 60,000.
Nelson sets itself apart from other small cities by offering a rare blend of outdoor adventure as well as arts, cultural and heritage experiences.  Nestled amongst the Selkirk Mountains and on the shores of Kootenay Lake the area is a Mecca for hiking, mountain biking, golfing and boating.  As the season's turn, the award winning terrain and abundant snow make for world class skiing and winter adventures.
Downtown is compact, walkable, and filled with unique, boutique style stores that reflect the diversity of the community. Nelson's live entertainment venues host first-rate performances year round, which combined with the selection of more than 30 fine restaurants, and the many seasonal outdoor patios means you'll experience the feeling of big city nightlife and dining in a classic Victorian setting.
Traditionally the economy of Nelson has been primarily resource based (forestry and mining) and while this sector still represents a vital component of this area’s employment, Nelson is also the provincial administrative center for the Kootenays with many regional and district offices of the provincial government centralized here.
Drive times to major centres are approximately ten hours to Vancouver (663 km), four hours to Kelowna (338 km), and three and a half hours to Spokane, Washington (237 km).
