Located on the shores of Kootenay Lake in the heart of the Selkirk & Kokanee Mountains, Nelson is a beautiful heritage city with story book charm and a vibrant community of approximately 10,000 people (surrounding area of 28,000). Known as "City of the Arts," Nelson sets itself apart from other small cities by offering a rare blend of outdoor adventure combined with the cosmopolitan sophistication of arts, cultural and heritage experiences. Downtown is compact and walkable with lush parks, colourful gardens and unique, boutique style stores that reflect the diversity of the community. Arts, theatre and music are prominently featured and Nelson's live entertainment venues host first-rate performances almost every night of the week, year round. Combined with the selection of more than 30 unique restaurants, cafes and well-loved coffee shops, as well as the many seasonal outdoor patios means you'll experience the social feeling of big city life and dining in a classic Victorian setting.
Heading out in to nature, the sky’s the limit when it comes to outdoor activities in and around Nelson. In the summer, the area is a mecca for hiking, mountain biking, golfing, water sports, boating and fishing.  As the season's turn, the award winning terrain and abundant snow make for world class skiing and winter adventures at Whitewater Resort.
Traditionally the economy of Nelson has been primarily resource based (forestry and mining) and while this sector still represents a vital component of this area’s employment, Nelson is also the provincial administrative center for the West Kootenays with many regional and district offices of the provincial government centralized here. The economy is also driven by local companies that work with large scale companies outside of the area connected via the internet. This is a very safe family-centered community offering diverse educational opportunities including public, alternative, and Francophone education, Catholic and Waldorf schools as well as a provincially accredited college.
Come to Nelson and let the heritage, adventure and community spirit welcome you
