Cranbrook is a thriving city located in southeastern corner of BC, in the middle of the broad Rocky Mountain Trench with a population of about 20,000 and a surrounding catchment population of approximately 26,000. Historically Cranbrook was a railway and mill town and today has transformed into the largest commercial centre in the East Kootenay Region. Nestled on a gentle plain with scenic mountain vistas in the distance, it is an ideal location to live, work and play.

Boasting more sunshine than anywhere else in British Columbia and with its idyllic climate, Cranbrook presents perfect conditions for outdoor adventure. Hiking or cycling on the many local trails, golfing at one of the 8 golf courses, or a relaxing afternoon boating on one of the 4 lakes within 30 minutes of the city are just a few of the many summer pleasures you can enjoy. The mild winter brings great opportunities for cross country skiing which starts right at the Cranbrook city limits, or alpine skiing just a short 20 minute drive away at Kimberley Alpine Resort. Drive just a little further and there are several other nearby mountain resorts to explore. Snowmobiling is also a popular activity with the locals and there is an almost limitless network of trails to discover and explore.

For those who enjoy more urban pursuits, Cranbrook offers a lively art and cultural community maintaining its small town charm. There are shops, boutiques and unique cafés, as well as an arts centre and heritage attractions such as the remarkable railway museum. Two theatres, a cinema, sports arenas and numerous parks leave no community enthusiast short of things to do.

With Cranbrook’s magnificent location, friendly people, the abundance of outdoor activities and so many great options for indoor activities, there really is something for everyone in this four season playground.

Apply now to join our collegial anesthesia team of 4 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, BC. We would welcome a new graduate or an experienced colleague, and we would welcome locums during the recruitment phase.

As a regional hospital, we serve a catchment area of ~75,000 and our anesthesia team shares equally in supporting three Operating Rooms, procedures in Ambulatory care, and a pre-screening clinic three days a week. This past spring we opened a new 6-bed state-of-the-art ICU, and in 2018 we expect to have a fixed MRI. Specialist services include: General Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, Urology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Radiology, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry.

We share call equally (24/7), typically 1/5 weekends + 1 day/week. Post-call is typically a day off or a day in the pre-screen clinic. And, if staffing goes below 5 anesthetists, we are supported by the provincial Rural Locum Program.

If you enjoy teaching, there are opportunities with RT Airway refresher training, with medical students and residents, and with helping rural doctors in the area to maintain/upgrade their skills.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, you will love the many amazing opportunities that await you in this beautiful valley between the Rockies and the Purcells. Come check us out!

Cranbrook has an airport with regular service to Calgary, Vancouver and Kelowna. And we are an hour from the US border and a 4 hour drive to Calgary. Come live and work where others only play!
