Cranbrook
Cranbrook is a thriving city with a population of about 20,000 and a surrounding catchment population of approximately 26,000.
Cranbrook is located in the middle of the broad Rocky Mountain Trench, on the west side of the Kootenay River, and boasts more sunshine than anywhere else in British Columbia. The stunning surroundings and idyllic climate present perfect conditions for outdoor activities such as horse riding, hiking and biking or a relaxing afternoon boating on the lake. The winter brings great opportunities for alpine skiing at Kimberley Alpine Resort just a short 30 km drive away or cross country skiing which starts right at the Cranbrook city limits. Snowmobiling is a popular activity with the locals and there is an almost limitless network of trails to discover and explore.
Cranbrook is home to the main campus of the College of the Rockies, which has over 2,500 full and part-time students from over 21 countries. There are seven elementary schools and two middle schools that feed into the city's high school: Mount Baker Secondary School, home to approximately 1,500 students.
Forestry, mining, manufacturing, tourism, trade, service and transportation make up the economic backbone of the East Kootenay region.
Cranbrook is a railway town, a mill town, a commercial centre, and an island in a sea of golf courses. It has a modern theatre and a lively arts community, a professional hockey team, a remarkable railway museum and an abundance of outdoor activities, there really is something for everyone.
Drive times to major centres are approximately 4.5 hours to Calgary (403 km), 8 hours to Kelowna (526 km), 1 hour to Creston (107 km). and 3.5 hours to Spokane, WA (306 km).  Cranbrook's airport runs multiple flights to Calgary and Vancouver daily.

Practice Details:

Apply now to join our collegial anesthesia team of 4 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, BC. We would welcome a new graduate or an experienced colleague, and we would welcome locums during the recruitment phase.

As a regional hospital, we serve a catchment area of ~75,000 and our anesthesia team shares equally in supporting three Operating Rooms, procedures in Ambulatory care, and a pre-screening clinic three days a week. This past spring we opened a new 6-bed state-of-the-art ICU, and in 2018 we expect to have a fixed MRI. Specialist services include: General Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, Urology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Radiology, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry.

We share call equally (24/7), typically 1/5 weekends + 1 day/week. Post-call is typically a day off or a day in the pre-screen clinic. And, if staffing goes below 5 anesthetists, we are supported by the provincial Rural Locum Program.

If you enjoy teaching, there are opportunities with RT Airway refresher training, with medical students and residents, and with helping rural doctors in the area to maintain/upgrade their skills.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, you will love the many amazing opportunities that await you in this beautiful valley between the Rockies and the Purcells. Come check us out!

Cranbrook has an airport with regular service to Calgary, Vancouver and Kelowna. And we are an hour from the US border and a 4 hour drive to Calgary. Come live and work where others only play!
