HPV immunization program
School-aged children are routinely offered the HPV vaccine in grade 6, with catchups in later grades for those who missed getting the vaccine.
The HPV vaccine is also publicly funded for those under 27 years of age, who were eligible in grade 6 but did not receive the vaccine. Certain groups of adults may be eligible to receive publicly funded vaccine.
Those not eligible for free HPV vaccine can buy it at most pharmacies and travel clinics.
To maximize expanded immunization opportunities, those eligible adults who are approaching the age limit for HPV vaccine eligibility are able to initiate a publicly funded HPV series until the end of 2025 and must complete the vaccine series by Dec. 31, 2026. This includes:
- Those who have turned or will be turning 27 in 2025 (birth year 1998)
- Select eligible groups who have turned or will be turning 46 in 2025 (birth year 1979)
The HPV vaccine provides protection against 25-35 per cent of mouth and throat cancers, 40-50 per cent of penile cancers, 80-90 per cent of anal cancers, almost all cases of cervical cancer, and 40 per cent of vaginal and vulvar cancers, and about 90 per cent of cases of genital warts.
