Patient identification and sample labeling criteria for TMS
Blood component transfusions (red blood cells, plasma and platelets)
Non-lab personnel collecting samples for TMS must meet training and competency requirements in order for samples to be acceptable.
Without exception
- Pre-transfusion samples must be collected at an Interior Health facility
- All inadequately labelled samples submitted for TMS are rejected
When to order a new crossmatch sample
| If the patient has | Crossmatch expires | Note |
| Been transfused with red blood cells or platelets or pregnant in the last three (3) months | 96 hours after the sample has been collected | Collection of a fresh blood sample within the 96 hr period is not required for additional blood cells or component requests or for ABO/Rh examination |
| Not been transfused with red cells or platelet, or been pregnant within the last three (3) months | 28 days (maximum) after TMS sample collection | Once the patient begins to receive red blood cells, the sample expiry time changes to 96 hours from the start of the first transfused unit |
Note: A crossmatch sample can only be used if the patient continues to wear the TMS ID band associated with that sample (e.g., patient wears the ID band with the same TMS ID number as was placed on the sample tubes at the time of collection)
Patients with antibodies
Additional time is required to crossmatch blood for patients with antibodies. In some cases, crossmatch-compatible units must be shipped from a Canadian Blood Services (CBS) referral centre, which may delay the transfusion.
