Signs and Symptoms of a Blood Clot
Blood clots can be serious. It’s important to recognize the warning signs and contact your health care provider promptly if you notice them.
General signs and symptoms of a blood clot
Watch for the following signs and contact your health care provider promptly if you experience:
- Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or faint
- Sudden shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Sharp chest pain that worsens when you take a deep breath
- New or sudden swelling in one leg or arm, particularly if it is warm, red, or tender
- Persistent pain or cramping in a leg or arm, especially when standing or walking
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) signs and symptoms
- Swelling, pain, warmth, or redness in a leg or arm
- Persistent cramping or pain, especially when standing or walking
Pulmonary embolism (PE) signs and symptoms
- Sudden shortness of breath or trouble breathing
- Sharp chest pain that may get worse when you breathe deeply
- Rapid heartbeat
- Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or faint
- Coughing, sometimes with blood
When to seek medical attention
If symptoms are severe, sudden, or worsening, seek emergency medical attention immediately. It is important to talk to your health care provider if you feel that you have increased risk of developing a blood clot.
