How IH’s grants make a difference during extreme weather events

May 14, 2025

When temperatures hit extremes across B.C.'s Interior, the need for shelter, nourishing meals and a sense of belonging becomes more urgent than ever. Extreme cold and extreme heat often have disproportionate impacts on those who are unhoused or have insufficient housing.

This past winter, Interior Health launched the 2024 Extreme Cold Weather Grant through the Health and Housing (H&H) Program. The purpose of this initiative is to engage community partners and enhance safety through one-time grants for the purchase and distribution of essential, life-saving supplies to those more vulnerable to cold weather.

The H&H Program, part of IH's Population Health portfolio, provides equitable access to health-care services for people who may be experiencing housing insecurity or those that are residing outdoors. The H&H Program also recognizes the importance of addressing the individual and unique health needs of those they serve. Program team members work closely with other IH departments such as Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU), Seniors Care, Acute Care and Primary Care.
