Slips, trips, and falls can happen at any time of the year, but they are more common when conditions are snowy and icy. People are more than twice as likely to experience a slip, trip, or fall incident during the winter months than any other period of the year.
Slips, trips, and falls continue to be the third-highest cause of muscle injury we see. Slipping and tripping hazards can result in injuries ranging from sprains, bruises, and cuts to fractures and head injuries.
Hazards to watch for
As winter conditions can change quickly, it is important to be aware of the following conditions:
- Icy, slippery parking lots, walkways, stairs, etc.
- Dimly lit areas with inadequate lighting (e.g. burnt-out lights).
- Puddles formed indoors where snow has been tracked in and melted.
- Limited visibility around corners as snow removal has resulted in high snowbanks.
Eight winter safety habits
Stay safe this year so you can enjoy the season and take in all that winter has to offer while avoiding injury.
Here are some safe habits to practice this winter:
- Keep your hands free while you are walking for balance.
- Wear appropriate footwear for the weather with non-slip soles.
- Stay on designated pathways.
- Know before you go! Check weather forecasts and road conditions before you head out.
- Be careful getting in and out of vehicles.
- Avoid carrying items that reduce your ability to see where you are going (i.e. a large packages that obscure your view).
- Give yourself enough time to get to your destination so you are not rushing.
- Help keep everyone safe by reporting any risky conditions this winter!
