Medical Staff Committees
Interior Health medical staff committees are guided by the quintuple aim of improving health outcomes, enhancing care provider and patient experience, and demonstrating stewardship, both fiscal and environmental, in co-creating equitable and sustainable healthcare.

Medical Advisory Committees
The Medical Advisory Committees (MACs) play an integral role for the medical staff in Interior Health (IH). The committee structure is made up of the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC), which reports directly to the IH Board of Directors, the Regional Medical Advisory Committees (RMAC), and the Local Medical Advisory Committees (LMAC).
The Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC) makes recommendations to the Board of Directors with respect to the privileges of all members of the Medical Staff to practice within the facilities and programs operated by IH. In addition, HAMAC acts in an advisory capacity to the Board & the CEO regarding:
- The provision of medical care within the facilities and programs operated by IH
- The monitoring of the quality and effectiveness of medical care provided within the facilities and programs operated by IH
- The adequacy of medical staff resources
- The continuing education of members of the Medical Staff
- Goals for meeting the medical needs of the population served by IH

HAMAC Standing Committees report directly to HAMAC and undertake specific responsibilities within the Medical Staff organization:
- Credentialing & Privileging Committee
- Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
- Medical Staff Resource Plan Committee
- Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules Committee
The Regional Medical Advisory Committee (RMAC) is established at each of Interior Health's four Health Service Areas, which has delegated responsibilities and Terms of Reference under the Medical Staff Rules Part II.
There are four RMACs that are appointed by the Board of Directors and function under the mandate of HAMAC.
The Local Medical Advisory Committee (LMAC) is established by the RMACs at individual sites within their operating area. Each LMAC has written Terms of Reference that are in keeping with site needs and the roles and responsibilities delegated to the RMAC.
There are 24 LMACs that are appointed by HAMAC and function under the mandate of the RMACs.
Section 51
Section 51 of the B.C. Evidence Act provides health care professionals with an opportunity to have open and honest conversations about the quality of care provided in hospitals without fear that the information can be used in legal proceedings. This legal protection is intended to improve care by supporting a positive safety culture.
The HAMAC and the MACs are Section 51 committees for certain discussions under the Evidence Act.
