Frequently asked questions
Information about care for Kamloops maternity patients and expectant parents
Anyone in labour or experiencing urgent pregnancy related concerns is asked to present to their closest hospital, including RIH.
Emergency care is always available for people in imminent labour or experiencing urgent complications. For information and assistance, please call 250-314-2635 to speak with RIH Labour and Delivery.
Prenatal and postnatal care continue to be available at IH-owned facilities and through community health providers.
If you do not have a maternity care provider, we encourage you to explore the following options:
- If possible, we recommend reaching out to your family doctor or nurse practitioner.
- You may connect with Healthy from the Start (1-855-868-7710) for additional support and information.
- If you do not have a family doctor or nurse practitioner, you can reach out to the Early Pregnancy Access to Care and Triage Clinic (250-318-3861), which provides antenatal (before birth) care up to 30 weeks of pregnancy. Interior Health has been able to work with the Early Pregnancy Access to Care and Triage Clinic to provide space at the North Shore Primary Care Centre for up to 24 additional appointments per week at that location.
- Expectant parents without a regular primary care or maternal care provider will be able to access labour and delivery services at RIH. All patients will be assessed. Depending on medical staff availability, patients may be transported to alternate hospitals to deliver their babies. If out-of-community care is required, families will be informed, and transportation and accommodation support will be provided if needed.
If your care plan needs to change, you will be informed directly and offered support; IH social work teams are available to support families with the logistics of transferring and to help ease the burden. We also have a Hardship Policy to provide assistance with related costs, including transportation.
