About Elk Valley Maternity Clinic - Elkford

The Elk Valley Maternity Clinic (EVMC) operates in three locations: Fernie, Sparwood, and Elkford. It brings together all maternity providers in Fernie, Sparwood, and Elkford to offer local families coordinated, patient-centred, team-based care from early pregnancy through delivery and up to six weeks postpartum.

The EVMC is staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including:

  • Family physicians
  • A midwife
  • Nurses
  • Allied health professionals.

Providers rotate clinic shifts and on-call duties across all three community clinic locations, giving patients the opportunity to meet multiple members of the care team during their pregnancy. This approach helps patients build relationships with the full care team while benefiting from their combined expertise and ensures the on-call provider is a familiar face in the delivery room.

Patients who are pregnant can access care at the Elk Valley Maternity Clinic in two ways:

  • Those with a family doctor are encouraged to book an appointment with their physician, who can send a referral to the preferred EVMC location. Once the referral is received, the EVMC will reach out to book the first appointment.
  • Patients without a family doctor can call the EVMC location of their choice directly. A self-referral form will be provided to gather information before scheduling the initial appointment at the location most convenient for the patient.
