Born and raised in Kamloops, B.C., Dr. Hilary Brotherhood always knew she wanted to serve others in a meaningful way. Now a urologist based at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, Hilary has spent the past five years delivering specialized, compassionate care to patients across the Kootenays.

A proud resident of syilx territory, Hilary feels deeply connected to the land and community she serves. Her decision to pursue a career in medicine—specifically in urology—was rooted in a strong desire to help people when they need it most.

“What inspires me is the distinct privilege of caring for people in their time of need, and to serve my community in this way,” she says. “I feel so grateful to work with such a great urologist in Dr. Michael Robinson, who leads by example as an excellent physician, medical leader, community leader and trusted colleague.”

Throughout her career at Interior Health (IH), Hilary has built a reputation for combining clinical excellence with equity-focused care. One of her proudest accomplishments was being invited to join the Navig8 Emerging Medical Leaders program—a leadership initiative that brought her together with colleagues from across the region.

“It was such an amazing experience,” she reflects. “Connecting with other medical professionals, learning about leadership, and visiting different communities within IH made a lasting impact on me both personally and professionally.”

As part of her Navig8 project work, Hilary focused on addressing gender referral bias—an often-overlooked issue in health care. She and her team implemented a centralized intake process at her clinic to ensure that patients are referred based on need, not gender. The change has had measurable, lasting results.

“Educating colleagues about the presence and effects of gender referral bias has had a positive impact on eliminating this bias in a sustainable way,” Hilary explains. “I give Dr. Robinson full credit for implementing this system from my first day of work, and I do believe it helps us serve our patients with a focus on equity, inclusivity and health resource management.”

Outside of work, Hilary leads a full and vibrant life with her husband and three children. Winters are spent skiing at Red Mountain, while summers bring peaceful days rowing on Christina Lake. No matter the season, the Brotherhood family loves exploring the breathtaking nature that surrounds them.

“We feel truly grateful to be able to live and work here,” she says.

As she looks to the future, Hilary is excited to continue building on the work she’s already started. “I look forward to ongoing work in IH, and to continue delivering excellent urologic care for patients throughout the regions of the Kootenays,” she says.

With her dedication to both clinical excellence and inclusive care, Hilary Brotherhood is not just a physician—she’s a trusted community member, a thoughtful leader, and a strong advocate for equity in health.
