Philippina physiotherapist achieves dream of practising in B.C.

Marianne earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Cebu Doctor’s University in 2016 and worked in a hospital setting until 2018. When she came to Canada, she knew she’d need to take extra steps to practise again in her field, but she was ready for the journey.

She was drawn to Canada for its high standard of health care and strong focus on rehabilitation and preventative care. British Columbia stood out to Marianne.

“I was drawn to B.C. for many reasons, including its growing demand for rehabilitation professionals and the supportive programs available for internationally educated practitioners,” she shares. “Plus, on a personal note, I’ve always loved being outdoors, so the natural beauty and lifestyle in this region really appealed to me.”

In 2020, Marianne enrolled in the Therapy Assistant Diploma program at Okanagan College, gaining hands-on Canadian experience while working as a recreation therapy worker in Kelowna. After graduating, she moved to Quesnel to build her skills and confidence as a rehabilitation assistant with Northern Health.

Marianne became a Canadian permanent resident in 2024 and returned to IH to join the community rehabilitation team in Merritt. There, she stepped into a long-vacant role and making an immediate difference in the community.

“Honestly, I’d applied for a role in Kamloops first,” she confides. “I had originally pictured myself in a bigger city, but I’m so glad I said yes to Merritt! Merritt’s location makes it easy to visit Kamloops, Kelowna or even Vancouver while still enjoying a quieter lifestyle.”

Throughout her journey, Marianne never lost sight of her ultimate goal: becoming a licensed physiotherapist in Canada. She successfully completed the credentialling process, the final step toward full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC).

“What sustained me through the rigorous process of becoming a licensed physiotherapist in Canada was my faith in my purpose and a genuine passion for the profession,” Marianne shared.

“I held onto the belief that I was called to this field to serve, not just to work, and knowing I could one day help others recover and improve their quality of life kept me going. The unwavering support from my family, colleagues and mentors also made a huge difference.”

For Marianne, her new role isn’t just a career achievement: it’s a full-circle moment. Every step along the way has brought her closer to this point.

“What I’m most proud of isn’t just earning the licence, but also the perseverance, resilience and professional growth I demonstrated throughout the journey.”

As she steps into her new position as a licensed physiotherapist with IH, Marianne’s story reflects not only her own determination, but also the invaluable contributions internationally educated professionals bring to health care across IH.

Marianne is a recipient of the Ministry of Health Internationally Educated Physiotherapist (IEPT) Bursary, which supports internationally trained professionals on their path to licensure.
