Working as a lifeguard for Parks Canada at Radium Hot Springs made Tomas Hucul realize his true calling was helping people. After trying different industries, he landed in health care where he felt he could make more of an impact in people’s lives, specifically their health and well-being.

Now as a recruitment assistant at Interior Health (IH), he enables others to do their best work.

“Although I am not directly saving people's lives on the front lines, I help support the people who do,” he shares. “I strive to provide the best service and support during the hiring process for new employees so that they may feel welcomed, informed and eager to use their valuable skills in patient care.”

Originally from Edmonton, Tomas earned a degree in psychology from the University of Alberta before embarking on a stint as a lifeguard for a few years. He decided to take his passion for helping people to the next level and further his education by pursuing an HR Management diploma, which he achieved from BCIT in 2023.

The reason I chose this career path in health care is to be part of a larger team making an impact on the overall health and well-being of society. I have held positions in other industries that did not align with my personal goals of making a difference in society.

A typical day for Tomas involves communicating directly with hiring managers and new employees through External Recruitment emails and supporting his colleagues in the Employee and Internal Recruitment teams.

With two years at IH under his belt, Tomas says he has more memorable moments at work than he can count. One situation, however, stands out for him.

“A candidate was having troubles applying to their dream position on our website and gave us a call in External Recruitment,” he recalls. “I took the extra time to call them back, walk them through the online application process and ensure their application was submitted.

“About a month later, it warmed my heart to notice they were successful in obtaining that position and they sent a very pleasant email of gratitude.”

It’s these moments that drive Tomas to continue to grow and develop his career at IH. This includes helping create an environment that feels safe and welcoming for everyone, where individuals can express their culture, language, opinions and identity free from discrimination or prejudice. To Tomas, reconciliation is continuously worked at through cooperation, mutual respect and understanding for the benefit of all.

Outside of work, Tomas’s favourite hobbies include cooking, trains and participating in any outdoor activities, especially hiking, paddle-boarding, volleyball and swimming. His interest in volleyball goes beyond just playing the sport. Tomas also referees and plays an active role in the wider volleyball community in B.C.

He is looking forward to taking a trip to Japan to ride trains, eat and enjoy the country’s natural beauty.
