Procedures available to IH patients, but performed elsewhere

Implantable Cardiodefibrillator (ICD)

An ICD is a small device that is placed under the skin beneath the collarbone. Through wires, the ICD continuously monitors the rhythm and rate of the heart. If the heart beats dangerously fast, the ICD sends an electrical impulse to the heart to jolt it out of the fast rhythm (similar to a cardioversion) and restore the heart’s normal rhythm and rate.  Read more information about Implantable Cardiodefibrillators.

If you require an ICD you will need to travel to a hospital in Vancouver or Victoria.  It is generally an outpatient/day procedure.  Please ask your doctor about travel arrangements. You will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure.  The procedure is available at the following hospitals:

Electrophysiology (EP) Studies

An EP study provides information on heart rhythm problems (disturbances) anywhere along the electrical pathway of the heart. This is done using highly specialized equipment and physicians. Read more information about Electrophysiology Studies.

If you require an EP study there may be an initial consultation with a visiting heart specialist in Kelowna.  The EP study will be done in Vancouver or Victoria. It is generally an outpatient / day procedure. Please ask your doctor about travel arrangements. You will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure.

Preparation and post procedure care will vary depending on which hospital your procedure is booked for.  The procedure is available at the following hospital:
