Food Recalls & Allergy Alerts
Learn how you can view national food recalls and allergy alerts. Discover our role in provincial food safety.
Food recalls & allergy alerts
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) routinely issues food recalls and allergy alerts to the public.
Our role is primarily to support CFIA recalls, upon request. This is typically for larger recalls that may be too taxing on CFIA resources. We, along with the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, have delegated authority under the Food Safety Act and may independently issue a Public Notice or Recall for provincially licenced facilities (e.g. dairy plants, meat processor).

When a public recall, or an advisory or alert is issued, it means surveillance tools are working. Recalls and safety alerts are sent out when the CFIA have important information to share - meaning you can feel more secure when choosing and using products.
The CFIA classifies recalls based on the level of health risk associated with the food product being recalled (Canada.gc; 2014).
