Julianna Duplessis loves her job as a diagnostic medical sonographer at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH).
She says every day is different and every diagnosis is different, keeping you on your toes.
“Every day is a new experience because as computers get better, so do the ultrasounds, so we see more and we constantly learn in this job. It’s not one you could be stagnant in,” noted Julianna, who’s been a sonographer for nearly three decades.

The variety lies in not only different cases, but in all the different ultrasounds that can be done on the body.
“We do all different parts of the body such as the heart. We also do different parts like the abdomen, the pelvis, baby brains, vascular - meaning the carotid arteries in people’s necks, the veins in people’s legs,” she noted. “Anything dealing with soft tissue, we can do.”
Aside from the medical aspect of the job, she loves working with the ultrasound team at RIH.

Royal Inland [Hospital] is a fantastic facility to work for because they really believe in work-life balance. So as much as you work every day here, and you work hard, they also like to balance it with time off and make sure you get some rest.
When she’s not hard at work, Julianna absolutely loves to get outdoors and walk the beautiful trails in Kamloops.
You can find her at Peterson Creek Park or Kenna Cartwright hiking with her dog Toby.

“I love hiking, I love the outdoors. I love gardening, anything dealing with the outdoors,” she noted. “It’s funny because I have an indoor job, but on my recreational time I love being with nature.”
For those who like variety and excitement, Julianna would recommend sonography as a career.
“If you want a career where you’re not stagnant, and you want to keep growing and growing, and learning things, this is the career for you,” she said. “With ultrasound, it’s not a repetitive task where you’re just taking pictures. You actually have to make sense of the pictures that you take, and try and build a story from there. It’s like the Clue game. Each piece of information you get, it leads to the patient’s diagnosis.”

Julianna nominates Cathy Bruno, ultrasound imaging assistant, to keep We Are IH going
“Cathy is such a beautiful caring person with the biggest heart. She cares so deeply for everyone she meets and is ready to provide help in any form large or small, whichever way she can. Cathy is a hard worker and very considerate, sometimes working overtime to make sure we are not left stuck without help. We can be such a serious bunch at times; she provides so much laughter in our department, it keeps us smiling.
“During the stress of COVID-19 she made sure everyone was practicing self care, which was not easy, in order for us not to burn out. She would remind us to take our breaks, stay hydrated, and eat or give us a safe place to vent... Cathy is invaluable. She is the light and laughter of our department. She is a fantastic mother to us all, which extends beyond our department. Everyone should have a Cathy Bruno in their life. I truly value her presence in and outside of work. I am positive my coworkers would echo the same sentiment.” – Julianna Duplessis
