The multidisciplinary cleft team includes a clinic coordinator, cleft surgeons (plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeon), orthodontists, speech-language pathologist, otolaryngologists (ENTs), pediatricians, pediatric dentist, audiologists, and dental hygienists. The multidisciplinary clinic is held at regular intervals throughout the year at the Interior Health Community Health & Services Centre in Kelowna. Care coordination and certain specialty services are available at any time, as needed.
- This service is available for children and youth from birth to age 19 who live in the Interior region of British Columbia
- Services are covered by the Medical Services Plan
- Referrals can be made to the clinic from the time that a cleft lip/palate is diagnosed during pre-natal ultrasound, upon birth or any time thereafter until the age of 19. Referrals are also accepted for patients transferring their care to the Interior from another cleft clinic. More information about how to refer can be found below.
Upon receipt of a referral, the clinic coordinator will contact the parent/s to provide information about the clinic and to answer any questions they have. The coordinator ensures that the parent/s are connected to the appropriate surgeons and other providers they may need after birth. The clinic coordinator is available to answer any questions and assist with any issues that may arise by coordinating necessary services before the age of 18 months. These services are typically the cleft repair surgeries, support of a pediatrician in your community, audiology and in some cases, advice regarding feeding issues.
Families are invited to visit with our multidisciplinary cleft lip and palate team for the first time when their child is approximately 18 months of age. These clinic appointments take place over the course of a morning in April or October, and families will be seen by the clinic coordinator, cleft surgeons, an orthodontist, a speech-language pathologist, an otolaryngologist (ENT), a pediatrician, a pediatric dentist, an audiologist, and a dental hygienist. Please see the FAQ section for additional details.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the referral process?
A doctor, midwife, nurse practitioner, public health nurse or member of the Kelowna Cleft Lip & Palate Team can submit the Cleft Lip and Palate Referral Form electronically if they have internal Interior Health system access.
Providers who are external to Interior Health are invited to print off and fax the referral form to 250-868-7809. The electronic "submit" button may be used by providers within the Interior Health email network.
What can I expect after my referral has been received?
You will be contacted by the clinic coordinator to arrange an appointment by phone, virtually by Zoom for Health, or in person at the Kelowna Community Health & Services Centre.
At this appointment, the coordinator will explain what services will look like depending on the age of your child/teen. She will provide general information about the services offered by the Cleft Lip & Palate Clinic. If your child is younger than 18 months, she will explain what services are needed by this age group, and explain that you will be connected to the health-care providers you need at this stage.
What health-care providers will be involved after my baby is born?
You will need services from a cleft surgeon (plastic surgeon and/or oral and maxillofacial surgeon), a pediatrician, and an audiologist for hearing testing. If you need assistance with feeding your baby you will be connected with feeding support by the clinic coordinator or pediatrician.
What can I expect at the clinic appointments?
Several families attend each clinic, held in April and October. You should expect to spend the full morning at the clinic.
Each family will see each professional. Families, along with their family doctor/nurse practitioner and other health-care providers involved in their child’s cleft care, will also receive a printed summary of the recommendations following the clinic.
Please note: This Kelowna-based team works in partnership with the health-care providers already caring for your child in your own community. The team does not provide treatment at the clinic, and does not replace the professionals you are seeing for current medical treatment.
