Kecia’s educational journey, like many in health care, is a story of continuous growth. She emphasizes that “continuing education and a willingness to learn are key steps to my career path now and in future.” This drive for knowledge has been crucial in her work, allowing her to support her colleagues, the leadership team, and the families who come through the NICU with compassion and dedication. Her educational background prepared her to navigate the complex and rewarding challenges of working in health care, while her personal experiences have enriched her ability to empathize with the families she serves.
Her work at IH has been deeply influenced by many factors, one being her own struggles with navigating health care for herself and her child, which have given her a unique perspective.

"If my only contribution is some small positive change resulting in families in our NICU feeling loved and supported, then I will consider that a win!"
Kecia’s personal experiences have motivated her to go above and beyond in her role, striving to ensure that each person she interacts with feels valued and cared for. She is also inspired by the strength she sees in the new moms and dads who are so brave as they navigate such difficult times. Her commitment to inclusivity, belonging and accessibility is evident in her belief that everyone deserves “equal opportunities and respect regardless of who you are, where you came from or what you have been through.”
A typical day for Kecia is far from routine. The dynamic nature of health care means she’s constantly adapting to meet the needs of her team, the patients and their families. Whether it's addressing the tiniest of needs or handling the more significant challenges that arise, Kecia works tirelessly to ensure the well-being of all involved. She finds meaningful connections in the people around her, especially the amazing NICU team at RIH, whose dedication and camaraderie leave a lasting impact on her. “I am so honoured to work where I do! The love and camaraderie." Kecia explains.
Her proudest and most memorable moment at IH came when she was recognized by her team. Kecia was deeply touched to receive an email from IH Recognition informing her that her NICU team holds her in high regard. For Kecia, this acknowledgment was a reminder of the importance of the work she does and the lasting impact it has on the people she supports.
The letter reads:

“It is with immense gratitude that we recognize Kecia for her extraordinary contributions to our team and the NICU. Her unwavering dedication, positivity and compassion have made her an invaluable member of our unit.
Kecia exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond in her role. She takes on any project or task without hesitation, demonstrating exceptional initiative and resourcefulness. Whether solving complex problems, walking blood samples to the lab to avoid delays, or assisting with tasks outside her job description, she does so with grace and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Her kindness and welcoming demeanor extend not only to her colleagues but also to every patient and family who enters our unit. She greets parents by name, checks in on their well-being, and ensures they feel supported—whether by arranging meals for families or simply providing a listening ear. Her actions consistently reflect her heart of gold.
Kecia’s patience, outstanding communication and proactive approach foster a positive and seamless environment for everyone. Her willingness to share her knowledge and assist her colleagues ensures that the unit functions at its best. Many of us feel a sense of relief knowing she is here, as her presence makes even the toughest days more manageable.
Kecia’s hard work, positivity and genuine care elevate the entire team and make her an irreplaceable part of our unit. We are truly fortunate to have her, and we deeply appreciate the joy, dedication, and excellence she brings to her work every day.
Thank you, Kecia, for everything you do!”

Outside of work, Kecia enjoys spending quality time with her family, especially with her dogs (Ben the border collie and Bruce the black bully), three sons and husband Simon. Whether hiking, camping or exploring B.C.’s hidden the hot springs gems, she finds peace in nature and cherishes her time away to relax. Looking ahead, Kecia is excited to witness all her sons’ life journeys, with a big milestone coming up for one of her sons: graduating high school early and moving forward in his chosen career path.

With a career built on compassion, growth, and a deep desire to make health care a better experience for all, Kecia Ward’s journey at IH continues to inspire those around her.
