Healthcare Travelling Roadshow inspires next generation
From May 5-9, 2025, the Healthcare Travelling Roadshow made its way to high schools in Salmo, Creston and Lumby. More than 450 students got to roll up their sleeves and explore real-world health-care careers through hands-on activities and face-to-face learning.
With a team of nine post-secondary health-care students leading the way, the annual Roadshow offers an interactive and engaging look into the many opportunities in the health-care sector. The Roadshow aims to inform, inspire and spark interest in exciting future careers.
Hands-on experience offers real-world career insights
Post-secondary students representing medicine, nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, cardiology technology and respiratory therapy led this year’s team. Over the course of the week, students at Salmo Secondary, Kootenay River Secondary in Creston and Charles Bloom Secondary in Lumby had the chance to learn from these future health-care professionals. They asked questions and tried out hands-on activities, while gaining insights into real-world career pathways.
Our students were extremely impressed by the hands-on nature of the experiences and felt as though they were given a great deal of information about careers in British Columbia's health-care sector. The experience was delivered by passionate professionals who engage students through hands-on learning. I would highly recommend the Roadshow to any school looking to help students learn more about the wide variety of health-care careers.
The Roadshow not only supports high school students in exploring their future, but also gives post-secondary health-care students a valuable opportunity to learn from one another and to practise interdisciplinary collaboration in a community setting.
Delivered in partnership with the UBC Southern Medical Program (SMP), the Rural Education Action Plan (REAP) and Interior Health (IH), the Healthcare Travelling Roadshow continues to be a powerful tool for both outreach and education across the Southern Interior.
An opportunity for middle school students, too
While the Roadshow team was in Lumby, IH also took the opportunity to partner with School District 22 to host an Experience Health event for local grade 7 and 8 students.
The event focused on introducing younger students to the world of health care through fun, interactive activities and meaningful conversations with professionals. IH staff and community partners, including representatives from medical imaging, respiratory therapy, emergency services, midwifery, pharmacy and more, were on hand to showcase their roles and answer the students’ many excellent questions.
These two initiatives reflect IH’s continued commitment to encouraging future health care professionals at every stage of their journey, from early discovery to informed decision-making and beyond.
